I-I know they can't be real. They can't. I heard everyone else talking about them, but... I thought I was spared. H-how foolish.

No, don't... don't look at me. Don't come closer!

...I know you died for me. I know, don't you think I know? I didn't want you to! Not for me, not for someone like me! You're not... [voice breaks]

Scheris...

[silence for a moment]

N-no, not you too. You're not here, you're not... you're not my mother! Get away!

[knocks on the room door before opening it and entering slowly] Ryuhou?

*is sitting on the bed, his head in his hands, and doesn't look up* Hijiri.

[goes over, sits down beside him and puts an arm round him, squeezing his shoulder lightly] It's alright now, Ryuhou.

[nods, still not looking up] I know. I know they're not real, and that it's fine. But... they're right there. [gestures to one side of the room, glancing over] My mother... she was killed by an Alter creature, and she's... covered in blood, like the last time I saw her. And Scheris... she was a girl who gave her life to save me. She looks so frail, like she's going to fade away any minute, and she has her Alter wings...

[shudders and looks away]

[leans his head against Ryuhou's then glances over at where he's looks and sees the ghosts. He looks at them calmly then over at the ghost of the little girl beside him, her head covered in blood. She smiles up encouragingly at him though and tries to hold his hand. Hijri smiles back then looks back at Ryuhou] I guess we share something similar then. Someone who's died so we could live. I've yet to see my parents... they died in a car crash...

[holds him tighter when he shudders and presses Ryuhou's face against his chest] Don't look then. They don't mean any harm... but to see them like that...

[hesitantly reaches out to put his arms around Hijiri, keeping his eyes closed] Who do you see?

[smiles a bit and holds him tighter, rubbing his back slowly] Kazusa. She's seven. I needed a cornea transplant since I was going blind in my left eye... her father happened to be the donor... he was a violinist too....

... she died after pushing me away from a falling pillar... I should have been the one under that rubble.

[lifts his head and opens his eyes, seeing the girl] I-I see. [swallows and glances back toward his mother and Scheris] Scheris... used her Alter power to save me. She could use part of her own energy to boost someone else's power... either to heal or to harm. I was dead... and she used all of her life force to bring me back.

[she smiles at Ryuhou] .... dead?

H-how did you die?

I was fighting the creature who killed my mother. I thought I was strong enough to defeat it... but I was wrong. It drained my power and then stabbed me through the stomach. The last thing I remember is falling from the sky... then I woke up with no injuries and Scheris's empty clothes beside me.

Was Scheris a close friend?

[nods] She was. I think... she loved me. I didn't realize how strong my feelings were for her until it was too late.

... I... I see. I'm sorry this had to happen, Ryuhou. It does sound like she had very strong feelings for you too...

[just holds him in silence for long while] ...I almost died once. Tried to kill myself.

I'm sorry... about your friend too. It must be hard on you to see her again, and I'm only talking about myself and my ghosts.

[lifts his head to look up at him] What happened?

[smiles a little] It's fine. We've talked a bit.. and I'm glad that she's happy in the place she's gone to.

... it's a rather long story. I told you just now that I needed a cornea transplant, right? Coz this eye here... [points to his left eye which does appear to be a little brighter than the other one if you look very closely] ... was going blimd. Turns out the cornea I got was cursed...

Kazusa's father promised to give Kazusa to a demon if the demon would give him great violin skills... the demon was supposed to take her after he died but then a piece of him, his cornea is still alive because of me. So the demon had to kill me first... It possessed me and I kept seeing and hearing illusions about how I was a monster, a murderer who did not deserve to live... and so, one day, I took a knife and slashed by own throat.

Oh god, Hijiri. [looks at him with concern] I can't imagine how awful that must have been for you. Did you get rid of the demon?

[smiles brightly] I'm okay now! Don't worry about it! Tsuzuki and Hisoka saved me in time and helped me get rid of that demon. They're real shinigami not like what Duo calls himself. So that's why I'm not afraid of whatever curse Duo thinks he carries around with him.

... [the smile falters a bit] ...my only regret is that in the end, Kazusa still died. She wasn't take by the demon but still... but she tells me she's fine and happy so. Everything's alright! [the smile brightens again]

I see. [pulls away slightly, thinking that Hijiri's cheer is forced] I'm glad you're able to see her happy, then.

[glances back at Scheris] She says she's glad for what she did...

Yeah, I am too.

[looks over at Scheris as well] I'm sure she is. So don't be so sad, okay? [smiles then stretches a bit] Ah~~ Being all emo like this is so not me! Wanna go out for a walk? Then I have to go drag Duo out from that alley... Such a busy day.
